Daft Souls: Until Dawn, MGSV, Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, The Taken King

This week we're joined by Leigh Alexander, Editor in Chief of Offworld. For those of you unfamiliar with her work, this piece about Animal Crossing is probably Matt's favourite bit of writing about games. If you want more, check out her stuff on gumroad.

A bit of a redux again this week, but I think it's been interesting to look at games like Metal Gear Solid V and Until Dawn from a variety of different angles - some crossover from previous guests, but some interesting  new observations too. We also chat about Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, which you can watch us play here, and Matt talks a little bit about Destiny: The Taken King.

You can subscribe via iTunesRSS , or download directly from Soundcloud.

Daft Souls: MGSV, Shower With Your Dad, Frog Fractions, Until Dawn

Quinns wasn't able to make it this time, so Matt is joined by Gav Murphy and Jon Blyth. We jump in with a discussion about spoilers and what people think that tends to actually mean,  before having a chat about the wonders of Metal Gear Solid V's stealth/action sandbox.

Gav has been playing a ton of Shower With Your Dad Simulator 2015: Do You Still Shower With Your Dad, which naturally led to a brief mention of Frog Fractions. Finally, we talk a bit more about the excellent Until Dawn - if you're interested in knowing more then keep an eye out, Quinns will have a video about it going up this Thursday.

SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND - 11th Sept

I think I can hear the Weekend Klaxon. The Venga Bus is coming. Hide the children. But first, let’s take a moment to look back on this week. An unbelievably intense episode of Hellduffers, a joyful dose of Daft Souls, a stupid song about helicopters, and then a quick top-off of some DRUGS and LOVE. I’m proud of this week, I think it’s been a good one. Thanks so much to all of our Funwraiths for making this stuff available for all.

But anyway! Now is the weekend-time, and it’s still about just two games for me: MGSV and Until Dawn. Both fantastic, and both so different that they’re lovely palette cleansers. I’m nearly finished with Until Dawn, but I really enjoyed how long it took for me to get a measure of what the game I was playing actually was - I wrote a bit about my thoughts on it for VICE this week.

Still, tonight I’ve got a live Regular Features show to perform at, and Saturday will mostly be taken up by the grand finale of my current Star Wars: Imperial Assault campaign. If I can’t crush the rebels then I think I might cry, just like in the films.

Ooh, good luck! During the final quest of my last Descent campaign I thought I might throw up. I ended up winning as the Overlord, and sealed up all four hero miniatures in a ziplock bag marked “DEAD HEROES”. Happy days!

And yes, this is yet another weekend to be sacrificed on the gun-altar that is Metal Gear Solid V. I can’t stand that it shows you a “% Complete” statistic in the main menu. Don’t show me that! I don’t want to load up my game, full of promise and mystery, only to be reminded that it will come to an end.

Other than that, I’ll probably try and find an hour or two to pour into Duskers. I said as much in EULA Surfers, but my god, that game has promise.

It looked strong! Judging from reactions I’ve read in the comments the people you’ve turned onto that haven’t been disappointed. How about you guys - what’s planned for the weekend?

MGSV: "Snake On Me"

We did promise when we launched Cool Ghosts that from time to time you'd get silly and unexpected things, and today is one of those days. I'd like to present Take On Me - Venom Snake Version: a silly treat for those who remember the Reviewsicals I made back at VideoGamer.

The news that Dragon's Dogma is getting a PC release early next year had me thinking about how much I love the original game's theme song, and the lost art of oddly literal localised lyrics in stuff like that and the wonderful Phantasy Star Online. It's probably one of my favourite aspects of Japanese games, and this felt like a fun way to pay homage. Cheesy homage. HOMAGE FRAIS. I need a lie down.

EDIT: Amended the name - thanks to HermanSL for pointing out the wonderful/obvious!

Daft Souls: Mad Max, MGSV, Big Pharma, Until Dawn

This week we're joined by Jim Trinca, talented producer of The Miller Report. He tells us how he's been getting on with Mad Max, and then we attempt to talk about Metal Gear Solid V for "just a minute" and then go off on one for quite some time. No spoilers though, we've barely touched it.

Matt shares his follow-up thoughts on Satellite Reign, and Big Pharma gets a quick mention - you'll have more on that this Thursday. Finally, the questions get completely derailed when we realise that Jim has also played Until Dawn, and interrogate him ruthlessly about what that's like. It's an exciting episode this week - we do hope you enjoy it!
