The Contender, Week 8: The Grand Finale

Quinns' quest (read: his mad scramble) to get into the top 10% of Street Fighter V players arrives at its teary finale! But don't worry. The Contender will return as an irregular podcast, and whenever it does we'll be posting about it on this very site.

For all you commenters, this week's question is a simple one. Now Ian's made invincible warriors of us all, what will you do with these newfound powers?

As always, huge thanks to all you Contenders who've been listening & training along with Quinns! If you missed our earlier episodes you'll find them right here, The Contender is available on iTunes here, and if you want to spar with Quinns or Ian you'll find them on SFV under the fighter names "Quinns" and "Plimpsoul".

The Contender, Week 7: Mr. Miyagi Breaks the Fourth Wall

It's do or die week as Quinns tries to get into the top 10% of Street Fighter V players in the world! To distract him the boys have a chat about their very favourite things in the game that have until now escaped their poddling. That means V-Reversals, stages and their favourite matchups.

This week's question is a pretty open-ended one. What matchups do you love? Which players do you love fighting? And when has the game just been AWESOME?

As always, huge thanks to all you Contenders who've been listening & training along with Quinns! If you missed our earlier episodes you'll find them right here, and The Contender is available on iTunes here.

The Contender, Week 6: Best of Three?

Six weeks in, and Quinns' quest to join the top 10% of Street Fighters in the world suddenly looks impossible. To progress, he must know his enemy. Even if his enemy is a wrestler with her butt out, a pair of legs in an army uniform or something that looks like it fell out of Killer Instinct.

Also, the game of Saltybet mentioned in this episode is still very much alive! Right now it's showing Joan of Arc vs. Ridley Scott's alien. Never change, Saltybet.

As always, huge thanks to all you Contenders who've been listening & training along with Quinns! If you missed our earlier episodes you'll find them right here. The Contender is available on iTunes here and the RSS feed is here. Want to train along with the Cool Ghosts community? The Contender, Week 5: Locating Quintin's Brakes

In the extended metaphor of Quintin's fighting journey, he's hit the open road and the COPS CAN'T CATCH HIM NOW. The boys chat about combos and cancelling, then veer off to discuss the giant March update. Capcom's gifted us with lounges, lessons and an elbow expert!

As for this week's question, we want to know: What are you working on this week? (And why is it so goddamn hard?)

As for the promised Contender tie-in video, we've done our test run! The real thing will be published with next week's podcast.

The Contender, Week 4: Arcade Sticks & Aching Regret

It's a big day for The Contender! To celebrate finishing our first month Ian has bequeathed his old arcade stick to Quinns. The boys also discuss gauges, YouTubers and character envy. It turns out one month is exactly long enough to figure out what your character is terrible at.

What about you, listener? Have you found true love, or will you be saying goodbye to your main?

Huge thanks to all you Contenders who've been listening & training along with Quinns! If you missed our earlier episodes you'll find them right here. The Contender is available on iTunes here and the RSS feed is here.

The Contender, Week 3: The Crepes Don't Work

It's week 3 of The Contender, and Quinns is in the depths of the darkness! He's losing all his matches. He's not done his homework. The crepes don't work. Good thing Ian's here with an important lesson on player tendencies.

Huge thanks to all you Contenders who've been praising and sharing this series! If you missed our earlier episodes you'll find them right here, The Contender is available on iTunes here and the RSS feed is here.

As always, if you want to watch replays of Quinns being terrible (or sensei Ian being awesome) their Capcom Fighter Names are Quinns and Plimpsoul. And so long as you don't tell anybody, you'll find sensei Ian's secret Twitter is here.

The Contender, Week 2: Attack of the Kens!

It's week 2 in Quinns' quest to join the top 10% of Street Fighter V players in the world. He's scratched the surface and there's a whole world underneath, and it's full of Kens! The boys also discuss which characters are at the very top of the leaderboards in their Meta-Forecast.

Huge thanks to everyone who's been so kind about this series. If you missed episode 1 you'll find it right here, The Contender is available on iTunes here and the RSS feed is here.

As always, if you want to watch replays of Quinns being terrible (or sensei Ian being awesome) their Capcom Fighter Names are Quinns and Plimpsoul.

The Contender, Week 1: Stop Jumping!

It's time for a brand-new weekly series! Street Fighter V is out, it's amazing, and Quinns wants to join the top 10% of players in the world. Will his quest break him... or make him?

But it's not all emotional hardship! We also want to explain to anyone who isn't playing SFV why it's so much fun, as well as track Capcom's steady development of an eSport that isn't quite finished.

If you own SFV and want to watch replays of Quinns or sensei Ian without their consent, their Fighter IDs are "Quinns" and "Plimpsoul". Add 'em as a favourite! There's even an achievement for it.

You'll find this podcast right here on iTunes and on this RSS feed.

Daft Souls 70: Street Fighter V, Puzzle & Dragons, Bravely Default 2

This week Matt hits PEAK-LURGY, evolving into the grumpiest man in the United Kingdom. If only someone had hit B during the transformation animation/fed him cake/let him slide away into a bath. Apologies for that - form will return shortly. This week we chat SFV, Puzzle and Dragons, the Bravely Default sequel, and more.

Don't forget that the next Live Q&A hangout will be taking place on Thursday the 25th at 10pm UK time. In a TRUCK. If you're a Funwraith, keep an eye on your Patreon inbox for a message on the eve.

If you enjoy listening to Daft Souls, you should write us an iTunes review! Want to ask a question, or vote for which questions should get answered next? Head over here!

Something For The Weekend: 19th February 2016

I talk more about this on the next Daft Souls, but I’ve recently come into some hot property: A friend who’s really good at Street Fighter. The stars are aligning! Street Fighter V is out, it’s accessible, and Capcom have clearly built it for long-term enjoyment. My plan for the next month is to have my friend Ian train me up, with the noble goal of joining the top 25% of Street Fighter players on the planet.

Do you want to join me on my adventure, Matt? Ah, your eyes say it all.

“It’s true that once upon a time I was The Best, but now I’m not so sure. This game looks dreadfully fast. Which of these gents is me again? And what does K.O. mean?”

Not to worry, uncle Lees. I’ll bring Cool Ghosts the glory it deserves.

Shush, whippersnapper! Did you know that when I was a boy - during the Megadrive vs SNES wars - it was really difficult to find bananas?

I think this weekend might be the one where I finally spend a chunk of time messing around in Cities: Skylines. I poked around with the basics last night, and there’s a brand new update with snow which perfectly matches the weather in MY SOUL. I'm also trying to get my Bloodborne save file up to scratch for the DLC - I actually did a bit of one-off YouTube streaming today, if anyone wants a watch.

Anyway - important news! Our next live hangout will be taking place on the 25th of February, at 10pm UK time. It’ll be a bit different this time, as we’ll be in a truck. We’ll send a link to Funwraiths on the day via Patreon - so keep an eye out for the invite to join us. And thanks so much to those who’ve been supporting us! It’s possible we’re biased, but we think it's likely that you’re the best.

What are you up to this weekend?
